This house is located at a narrow site that has a 20-foot frontage and is 98-feet in width. The site is an area near the center of Kitakyushu Fukuoka that is mixed with houses, high-rise apartments, and commercial facilities.
We had to consider that high-rise buildings will be built in the future. The house then became three stories as per the clients’ request that there are four parking spaces and necessary rooms. The clients requested a bright space taking in the light while protecting privacy. Therefore, we designed the atrium with a cone shape to the third floor from the first floor, along with balconies surrounding it. Because to the south the elevation has a V-shaped opening and louver, it ensures ventilation and sunlight for each room through the courtyard while protecting privacy.
Thus, the project became the bright space by the cone-shaped void and frosted glass, while maintaining the privacy in an environment that has a high density of houses and apartments.
