Inspired by seeing the practice's Stirling Prize shortlisted house The Lawns, the owner of a nearby house commissioned the practice to design a replacement house on this unique site overlooking Highgate Cemetery. The new house is set over four floors with a generous proportion of living to bedroom space including balconies, terraces with views of the City skyline and a sizable sliding glass rooflight enabling the top floor to become an open- air court. The street façade is an abstract composition of black granite slabs making reference to the surrounding monumental masonry together with translucent glass and black steel panels. In contrast the cemetery elevations are largely glazed, suffusing the interior with natural light and washing the fairfaced concrete structural frame and walls with sunlight. Reviewing the completed house for Architecture Today magazine, John Winter described the new house as being " as near to a faultless building as I have seen for a long time ".
