Community Building
Building community by building with the community. That’s the idea for the Glass Pavilion, which has been designed by Bygg Architecture. The pavilion is an initiative of residents of Strijp-S (Eindhoven) who are constructing a temporary, multifunctional building with volunteers on an empty plot, called Plug-In City, which is awaiting final redevelopment. The building is constructed with reused materials such as large window frames and incorporates disbanded shipping containers in its design.
The idea was born, after Dutch Design Week 2013, when the co-ops Plan-S and Power-S had built a temporary pavilion from reused window frames from a renovation project. After DDW, these materials became available for a new initiative and the idea was formed to give them a next life.
The pavilion serves social, cultural, and creative activities for and by the residents, entrepreneurs, and visitors of Strijp-S: by the community, for the community. Volunteers spent their free time building the pavilion, under professional supervision. The pavilion has been open to the public since September 14th, during the event Frequentie-S, which displays all initiatives of Strijp-S to the general public.
