Haacht, Belgium

YEAR
2011
SIZE
25,000 sqft - 100,000 sqft
The aim of the project was to create a spacious family house in the suburban village of Haacht. The orientation and the narrow plot led an L-shaped plan, around a terrace overlooking the street. The living spaces, located on the ground floor, consist on a large living room and a kitchen in its purest form : a large working table of 8m long, holding its opening on the street. The upper floor is organized along a corridor enlightened by carefully detailed skylights. A skin of wood covered the ground creating a unity and a contrast with the pure white walls. The mass of the envelope made of dark glued roughly grained brickwork highlights the fragility of the ground-floor windows, including ceiling-high doors opening towards the terraces. The structure made by "in-situ" concrete is permanently visible in the house, and is supported by eight 40mm x 300 mm steel columns/plates, increasing the views angles in the house.
