The objective of the total refurbishment of the Franciscan monastery in the historical center of Graz was to achieve an architectural and organizational transformation of the building complex on the basis of forward-looking, sustainable and ecological fundamentals. Since the construction of the monastery and the church started as early as in the 13th century the building complex has been enlarged, built up and adapted over the centuries. The urban setting, the role of the order in the city, the requirements regarding preservation and respect for the preservation of the historic centre led to a specific solution from a technical and creative point of view.
The building underwent a complete thermal rehabilitation, solar collectors were installed and the top floor of the south wing was converted into a office spaces. By installing a low-energy heating system which is integrated in the walls and floors, the corner stone for a “nil emission” monastery has been laid. Dormer windows were built in the roof to provide natural light for the top floor and together with the solar collectors they have been integrated to provide a uniform appearance. The careful addition of high quality architectural elements means that the Franciscan monastery can continue to be an “urban venue for open encounters” in the 21st century, too.
