The "Olive Farm" is the pinnacle of my third year study. The initial motivation of the project came from a study of control mechanism's and their influence on society. Whether the mechanism be a clock (demonstrated in Fritz Lang's Metropolis) or whether the mechanism is a manufactured idea (instrumental power demonstrated in George Orwell's 1984). The control mechanism in question in this instance is the Defense Wall separating Israel and Palestine. As the project developed as well as critical thinking challenging the idea of the Defense Wall. Questions were raised for example: Is it possible to monitor the monitors? This question gave the drive towards the Olive Farm.Through monotonous research regarding political boundary and architecture, a solution was derived. Due to strict political control and censorship from the Israeli Government, an overt demonstration of oppression inflicted on the Palestinians would be near on impossible, however, for thousands of years the a large part of Palestinian culture and economy has strongly been based on the production of olive oil. Whilst the Israeli Government have been in total control of Palestine and the West Bank, olive growing has suffered intern affecting the growth of the Palestinian economy. How the Olive Farm resolves these issues is: as Palestinians pass through checkpoints from Palestine to Israel a simple olive stone is dropped in a pot at the checkpoints which are found along the wall. These pots are then collected and transported to the farm, where a group of Israelis known as the Kabutz movement (who wish to return Palestine to a green bountiful country) work to plant these stones to grow into olive trees. After a period of time when the trees are large enough they are then loaded onto the machine and moved, to be planted along the Defense Wall. After 20-30 years the trees will then begin to take back the land, replacing the concrete border with green fruitful - olive trees. This will then replace a lost economy for the Palestinians.According to Israeli legislation the transportation of building materials to Palestine is restricted. This was resolved by using what material is in abundance: which is the wall panels used to construct the Defense Wall. The geometry and proportions of the farm are subject to the proportions of the wall panels. The aim of this project besides creating an architecture is to aid a commentary on borders and conflict rather than a building.
