For the design of this environmentally sensitive, 960 car parking expansion for this northern New England regional facility, Towers|Golde adopted a holistic design approach. Various functional requirements were integrated into an innovative parking configuration with large, irregular landscaped islands. Issues addressed included storm water collection/treatment/storage, natural feature/habitat preservation, visual screening, snow storage and the reduction of the heat sink effect caused by large expanses of pavement.
T|G’s unique design was the direct result of a challenge posed by the owner to provide an attractive and functionally innovative parking facility which would also ease the site plan approval process. The city’s site plan regulations were waived for this project when it was proved that more than 8 times the required area of landscape was being created within a context that maximized preservation of existing forest.
