Despite the majestic setting, first-time visitors to Cuvaison were often unsure they had arrived at a welcoming destination. The winemaker and marketing director were often disappointed to see cars turn into the property, but then turn back without stopping to sample their delicious wines. Now, when visitors pass through the gracious new entry, they know immediately that they have arrived. The architecture of the new Tasting Room and Barrel Building conveys that the campus is not only an inviting “place” for tasting wine, but also a symbol of the entire Cuvaison experience. Sitting on the outdoor terrace, or within the dramatically glazed Tasting Room—feeling the presence of the vineyard and learning about the diverse collection of styles and vintages—the guest becomes a part of the Cuvaison family, ready to return again and again. The warm, yet modern feel of the architecture enhances the Cuvaison brand, providing a backdrop for an experience that attracts a new generation of wine patrons. Revenues from direct sales increased immediately following completion of the new facility; Cuvaison’s continued success is at least in part a testament to the power of architecture to enhance the winery experience and thereby, the profitability of the brand.
Sustainable design strategies include rainwater collection, denim insulation, passive cooling and reclaimed/FSC-certified wood siding and millwork.
