This 19th century factory space, located in the new historic downtown arts district, proved challenging to accommodate the sophisticated, yet simple program requirements of the client. While allowing for as much light penetration as possible from east-facing fenestration in a narrow-shotgun space, there is one simple interior architectural gesture that houses the bathroom and kitchen, and provides a visual and physical separation between functional space and living space. In addition, custom cabinetry/wardrobes and full-height freestanding light-diffusing draperies serve as subtle space divisions that reinforce the central idea of open space.
