Chapman Elementary School is sited on the crest of a hill on the northern edge of this rural Kansas community. The 2-section K-5 facility offers compelling views from every classroom. The 70,000 s.f. facility is one of three new schools designed by BBN, to replace those destroyed by a tornado in 2008. Creating enjoyable and effective centers for learning became our key objective. The whimsical and colorful interior finishes and graphics of the elementary school help set this tone, and were designed to facilitate a fun and memorable environment. A fabric mural that reiterates the rural prairie setting adorns a soaring central corridor with clerestory windows that transfer daylight to interior spaces. Many sustainable features were incorporated for optimal energy efficiency and decreased maintenance.
