Nestled amongst the dense foliage on the fringe of a suburban coastal town in WA’s South West, sits 0722 | CEDAR HOUSE. Located on the site of the original weatherboard workers cottage, the building’s form and materials hint at its historical setting, of the 1830’s memorial to the towns first settlers, directly opposite. Cedar clad ‘U’ shaped structures whisper the metaphorical reference of long boats that beached themselves on the sand at the bottom of the site, whilst steel angled supports, reference both the oars of the long boats and dark trunks of the local peppermint trees.
The ‘U’ shaped structures offer protection from the harsh elements to the external rooms of dining and living, enabling the occupants to comfortably be at one with their surroundings. Interconnecting spaces are explored both in plan and section in order to express the relationship between social spaces and cellular spaces, inside and outside, natural light and ventilation. Apertures are articulated throughout the building, heightening the experience of the inhabitant as they move between framed and expansive views, harnessing the sites greatest and most dominant asset; the Southern Ocean.
