Fort Baker, a former military fortification at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito, has been transformed into Cavallo Point Lodge and the Institute of the Golden Gate, a unique public, private and non-profit alliance created to sustainably restore, enhance and preserve the historic U.S. Army base as a new National Park.
Located in 27 acres of parkland, Cavallo Point Lodge is comprised of 21 rehabilitated historic buildings and 14 new lodging buildings sensitively integrated into the National Register Historic district. The new conference and retreat center, with meeting rooms, restaurant, spa, and 142 guestrooms, offer public programs on environmental and social issues. The transformation of Fort Baker to Cavallo Point Lodge powerfully demonstrates the inter-relationship between preservation and sustainable design and has achieved USGBC LEED Gold certification. This historic landmark has been respectfully preserved for future generations as a center to advance the health, sustainability, and the protection of our environment.
