This piece was created for “Giving Shelter,” a benefit organized by Architects for Animals for FixNation, a non-profit working to reduce Los Angeles’ stray cat population.
We made a home for California cats to perch and observe. In harmony with the climate and taking cues from some of the classics of outdoor living, it creates a lounging surface, gives dappled shade, and provides hours of entertainment for cats playing with the strings.
Experimenting with the irregular use of regular geometry, five aluminum hula hoops pitch, roll and yaw in a constellation of orbits. Three hoops provide structure while two – the “cat ring” and the “key ring” – are woven with a spiraling cat’s cradle of rayon webbing.
