E L I is a blueprint to elevate the quality of life on Long Island. Utilizing the LIRR as an armature, it introduces a new bike and pedestrian pathway that physically connects towns. Functioning as a pedestrian highway and a destination itself, E L I manifests itself as a series of public spaces previously unknown to Long Island. New public spaces like the elevated pathway, open piazzas, and pedestrian only streets, empower those without cars and encourage others to explore Long Island outside their vehicles. Identifying the over-implementation of asphalt covered parking lots, E L I aims to make better use of mismanaged space, condensing parking, and building a more engaging public space in its place. Two-tiered, stacked, parking system uses 50% less square footage then the current parking configuration, and coupled with buried automated parking, the space previously occupied by parked cars is given back to the people of Long Island. Massapequa was identified as having one of the largest areas of improper land use on Long Island. The space devoted to parking in this town is immense. So much in fact, that parking pours out onto Sunrise Highway during the weekday. Massapequa needs to belong to its citizens - not their cars. Our proposal aims to elevate the quality of life for the commuter and towns-person alike.E L I is not so much a solution for Massapequa as it is an adjustable system to interact with the individual towns of Long Island. Unlike a site specific master plan, E L I grows from the existing infrastructure of the LIRR, allowing it to grow into and engage any town within a mile or so of a train station. On a local scale, it creates a meaningful, pedestrian friendly downtown in each specific town. On a larger scale, it connects the towns themselves to each other - Long Island as a whole.
