HNTB designed the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to be unlike any other pedestrian bridge in the country. The one-of-a-kind steel structure is a visual marvel, meandering between Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, in a graceful curvilinear S-shape.
Relying on its experience and expertise designing iconic pedestrian bridges, HNTB designed the Kerrey Bridge to enhance its natural surroundings. The design-build project incorporates specific protections for migratory birds and interactive sculptures that educate users about endangered Missouri River species.
When the 2,300-foot-long bridge opened two months ahead of schedule in September 2008, it was listed among the longest pedestrian bridges in the nation. The project completed the City of Omaha’s infrastructure development and revitalization effort for its downtown and riverfront areas and helped transformed a once heavily industrial area into a popular urban destination.
The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge has received numerous awards, including a Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.
