Paper Factory at Karawang near Jakarta - Indonesia contacted Raul Renanda Design to redesign their existing old office lobby. It has two main areas that had to be explored, the entrance to the office and the lobby itself. First attempt from the architects is to create a lobby with lots of graphics about company's history and their future plan, but after factory tour and company's director advice to use the left over material, the architect saw the paper core and reminded him of Shigeru Ban's project that intensively used the same material. He felt that using paper core that literally available hundreds on the factory of was appropriate homage to Shigeru Ban's idea.
Inspired by the use of paper core, then the design develop into different concept. Raul Renanda use the idea of the paper making process into a 3 Dimensional visual story, about a tree, a paper, the leftover and the use of the paper.
From the entrance the wall to cover the old office roof erected a wall with sharp edges and paint it in white that has a specific shape just like how the paper rolled in the machine for the first time, and the wall with its sharp edges will look very thin like a paper.
The BMJ logo in front of the lobby was avoided since this office located inside their factory area that already have lots of company's logo, instead their motto "Eureka Everyday!" chosen to greet their clients before entering the lobby.
Since the existing ceiling rather low, the entrance floor is pushed to make the door as near to the ceiling as possible to create the pressure effect, and in the interior part it goes down to street level to make the ceiling looks taller.
Inside the lobby, it has three function; the reception, the waiting room and small meeting place. The wall use the paper core as decorative elements and room divider. The reception design inspired by origami that again showing the concept of the magical use of paper.
Ceiling made by gypsum panels painted in dark grey and the floor use the fake wood ceramic tiles due to durability consideration.
The design try to give a sense of lightness of the paper and the dramatic lighting and dark tonal interior to boost the stronger white paper look for the reception table and the drop ceiling above it.
