Commissioned by the City of Pasadena Department of Public Works through a grant from Cal Trans, the Pasadena Bike Transit Center lies in an alleyway across from the Memorial Park Station light rail platform in Old Town Pasadena and is intended as a prototype for future expansion along the MTA Gold Line. The enclosure is created through a series of interwoven ribbons of steel pipe, integrating the bike racks and structure. Computer controlled bending machines efficiently produce the repetitive curves for a sturdy, light-weight, easily-transportable and cost effective structure consisting of 5' bays that can expand or contract according to user or site needs. Polycarbonate and photovoltaic panels are seamlessly integrated into the form to provide shelter, security, energy and visual interest.
