An urban school site for more than a century, this San Francisco Unified School District campus was converted from a 60 child preschool into a middle school for 230 students based on community outreach. It is located in the emerging residential community of South of Market in San Francisco and now with the addition of this Bessie Carmichael Middle School, Filipino Education Center Campus the community is provided with comprehensive K-8 facilities. The campus incorporates a range of design responses to program, site and context that support the school district’s mission and focus on the needs of the broadening mind of a middle school student respectfully. The three existing one story buildings occupy the east of the site. The new building is located on the lot line to the north of the site on the Clara Street alley. In so doing, the new building sits back from busy Harrison Street using the play yard as a sound buffer while providing tree protected southern exposure. Making the building two stories preserves the maximum open space which is utilized for play yard and open garden seating. The sixteen foot overhang and walkway provide a cohesive continuation of the existing buildings protected courtyard, suffice to shade the building from the eastern and southern exposure and provide ample outdoor learning areas. The Cafeteria is located on the second floor where the roof slopes to orient the building eastward toward the city. Benches line the walls inside and out and are scattered throughout the site to provide the students time to study or relax and socialize with peers.
