Jeffrey Hutchison & Associates translated the urbane Barneys aesthetic for the excitement and intensity of the Las Vegas environment, while keeping mind the diverse architecture prevalent throughout the city. The space features three floors with each level conveying a distinct feel and experience that coordinates with the wares. Brash opulence can be seen throughout the space in details such as the patterned ceiling and the “multi-framed” portals on the ground floor, as well as in the dramatic spiraling staircase curving through all three levels. A 45 foot fritted glass box forms the exterior perimeter of the top two floors. JHA devised a decorative sunburst pattern using stylized versions of card symbols (such as hearts, spades and diamonds) in keeping with the Las Vegas vernacular, and carved them into an internal layer of glass. As a means of capturing the intense natural desert light and channeling it into the store, a round sun-like skylight sits above the internal dome that sits directly above the monumental staircase and creates an almost tented, “big-top” effect.
