The Bank of Beijing Science and Technology Research and Development Center is a landmark project in Beijing's Shunyi New Town City. The campus integrates an iconic office building, data center, employee residence, and training facility into a dynamic composition totaling 200,000 gross square-meters. Each building is designed to optimize functional performance, program adjacencies, exterior views, and passive sustainable strategies. A common concourse level links the buildings and defines a central courtyard which serves as a green sanctuary for the campus.
A 15-story office tower anchors the campus to the east and is defined by a 750mm-deep, externally ventilated double wall that regulates interior temperature while insulating occupants from environmental pollution. A series of vertical glass fins support the outer, transparent layer of the glass, while a highly reflective inner layer of glass minimizes heat gain and maximizes the façade's visual depth. The surrounding courtyard buildings incorporate a sophisticated facade of strong vertical elements tied together by staggered horizontal fins. This system optimizes solar shading while allowing interior views. The strong geometry of the courtyard buildings creates a robust aesthetic that relates to the designs of both the natural landscape and the tower.
The highly rational plan of the office tower fosters an efficient work environment. It features a large central atrium that encourages natural daylight and, in conjunction with the tower's split core, can accommodate a 1,200 square-meter ballroom and exhibition space. These spaces open to the central courtyard and enjoy dramatic views of the entire campus.
The campus' central courtyard, designed by landscape architect Tom Leader, is divided into a series of smaller scale spaces that correspond to adjacent interior programs. These outdoor 'rooms' serve as meeting areas, classrooms, or quiet locations for contemplation. Throughout the campus, on-site water filtration and natural absorption enhance the landscape's sustainable performance.
