This northeast facing residence located on the slopes above Balmoral Beach spans three levels supported by a forest of tall columns beneath a flat, sinuous roof. From the property’s street level entrance, a graduated descent through a densely planted courtyard leads to the building’s entry door, through which an expansive view extends across the main living level to the surrounding landscape and the ocean’s horizon beyond.
From this point of entry a sculpted timber staircase leads up to the bedroom level and down to the ground-floor entertainment area, garden, and swimming pool.
Throughout the building, the curved lines of the roof are echoed by the internal walls and by two sculptural cut-outs that allow light to penetrate from morning until evening. A unified effect has been achieved by integrating lighting, storage, and services seamlessly into the curving walls.
The house is a modern sustainable residence, heated via a large evacuated tube solar hot water collector system which is integrated with domestic hot water and underfloor hydronic heating. In addition to numerous other environmental measures, the house also boasts an extensive photovoltaic system generating 7.7kW peak output, and a 20,000L rainwater tank used for plant watering and pool top-up.
