Situated on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, A Room for London is a collaboration between Artangel and Living Architecture, in association with the Southbank Centre.David Kohn Architects, a practice known for its emphasis on collaboration and attention to detail, approached Fiona Banner - an artist whose work repeatedly explores the themes of narrative and history - to join forces and create the winning entry for an open competition to design a unique room on one of the most visible sites in the British capital. Living Architecture, who co-sponsored the project, stipulated that the room had to be an exemplary architectural landmark and be able to accommodate up to two people at a time.Kohn and Banner decided on a boat for their entry, called ‘Roi des Belges’ which, perched on the Queen Elizabeth Hall’s roof on London’s Southbank, appeared to have come to rest there, grounded, perhaps, from the retreating waters of the Thames below. The idea evolved from narratives of travel and displacement in literature - in particular Joseph Conrad’s novella ‘Heart of Darkness,’ a story that begins beside the River Thames. Each aspect was considered and crafted to produce a one-off, stimulating space. The pyramidal steel mast makes reference to one of London’s architectural highlights, the spire of Hawksmoor’s Christ Church. The interior timber-lined walls are reminiscent of boats of old, but have been boldly coloured magenta and turquoise. The collaborative spirit of the project has since continued beyond that of its originators, with the temporary structure playing host to a guest programme of special visitors. Artists, writers and cultural commentators of all kinds, co-sponsored by Artangel, have extended the collaborative effort through writing, image-making, online postings or live webcasts from the Room itself. These ‘thinkers-in-residence’ have created idiosyncratic entries in the logbook in response to their unique surroundings - past ‘stowaways’ including creative luminaries such as Michael Ondaatje, David Byrne, Luc Tuymans and Jarvis Cocker. http://aroomforlondon.co.uk/
