A PROTOTYPE FOR A NEW CINEMA (link)
Film Center in Hollywood
The internet and technological
revolution will in the next decades be
forcing several traditional cultural
institutions to rethink their form and
position in society. Under these
conditions the cinema must radically
reconfigure itself as a new institution
to keep its physical presence.
These days, most cinemas are getting
digitalized. The old cinemas were a
necessity of their time; today the
digitally based cinemas are no longer
limited to their existing boundaries,
which open for new possibilities.
In the digital age we are observing a
tendency towards a more individual and
less collective experience of film,
which is causing the cinema to become
less physical and architectural, though
the change is positive for the
progression of the film scene.
The project is looking for a way to
unite the technological progression with
a collective experience of film. Through
a programmatic/technological research
and development, the project proposes a
series of plausible cinemas that are
different responses to the current
condition.
The project is addressing the relevance
of Los Angeles as a city whose identity
and experience has emerged through the
film industry and pop-culture. The
architecture is culture ? specific, by
incorporating several contextual
features such as the billboard, the
movie sets, the open lobby, spaces of
spectacle and generous parking.
In a commercial, eclectic context the
building is seeking attention through
mystification and simplicity.
