This house serves as a home for my family and also as an architectural designing office where I meet with my clients.
A town of Minato, Tsuchiura is located on a peninsula protruding into Lake Kasumigaura and is surrounded by the levee.
The property is located on the northeast corner of a neighborhood block, and is one block west of the levee.
From the east side of the house’s second floor, we get a beautiful view of Lake Kasumigaura and the cherry blossoms on the lake’s levee in spring.
Most homes are built facing south and typically have a yard on the south side of the house. This house is built on the northwest side of the property in an L-shape with the long dimension running north to south - opening up to the southeast.
On the ground level, I designed a 3m/10m rectangle courtyard that complements the L-shape. The living, dining and kitchen space, and the office face the courtyard which provides a shelter to enjoy the greenery, sky and a warm sunlight coming through the window while maintaining a private space.
The 427 square foot living, dining and kitchen space located on the east side receives ample morning sun for the family to enjoy and a consistent natural sunlight throughout the day. In addition, a skylight accents the living room - providing an opportunity to enjoy the changing light coming from the sky above.
The office space is intentionally located right next to the entrance to welcome, rather than exclude the family. for the family to walk by. I am looking forward to the special moments to have my children look at their mother work and sitting next to each other to study in the office.
I look forward to my children seeing their mother work and to sit together and study in the office.
Living, dining and kitchen space and a bathroom where we spend most of our day is located on the first floor, and bedrooms and children’s rooms are on the second floor. The second floor boasts a flexible floor plan to allow for the future needs of a growing family.
Also, on the second floor, there is a 142 square foot balcony facing south for hanging laundry, futons, and enjoy sunbathing privately. I dream for the house to be where my family shares our love for each other, and cherishes every moment of life – day to day, year to year, the changing seasons.
