The site is a typical Haringey high street; the build fabric carries a strong ‘civic’ vocabulary but rather worn.In the light of immanent and insensitive development local protest had galvanized around preserving a ‘totemic’ tree that would most certainly have been destroyed in favour of retail grocery. My proposal, conceived around notions of healing and reconciliation, seeks to restore a sense of place for the high street and local residents. A homeopathic centre defined and ordered as an interplay within and between zones and boundaries, which advance and reseed with texture, mass, structure and void sensually juxtaposed to enhance the therapeutic experience. One passes through a fragrant herb garden and enters a tower to imbibe tea and contemplate the passing hour. Therapy consultation rooms lead to an educational facility at the other end of the site designed to be welcoming and to promote the benefits of calm and well being to a wider community.Texture, mass and surface: a rammed earth wall which carries presence and grain, natural timber lining and floor surfaces through and around the site respond to the activity and to the pace of the user.
