ISTUDIO was founded with a dedication to creating artful, sustainable communities. _____________________________________________Good design has a critical role in improving the quality of life by improving the places we inhabit. We focus on creative, well-reasoned, and unique solutions with every client regardless of project type. Our work ranges from small-scale residential and commercial to medium and large-scale institutional, international, and planning projects, but the same thread of a thoughtful process runs through each one.
Since opening the studio in Washington DC in 1999, our studio has enjoyed collaborating with clients and partners in our own backyard and around the world. We are honored by the awards and recognition we’ve received for our design work and our commitment to community-building and sustainability… and will continue to provide a blueprint for inspirational places to live, work, learn, and play.PROCESS
What is the path to a home, a school, an office, or a neighborhood that is artful and sustainable?
The goal within our studio is to establish a vision for the end result through a process of communication, collaboration, and commitment to a smart design process. The following thoughts reflect the approach we take, a kind of translation of the architectural ideals of “firmness, commodity, and delight”:
Draw inspiration from the context
The built forms, the materials, the details, the spatial relationships – are enriched when they share something with “where” they are and “who” they serve. This is architecture that responds to culture, climate, history, environment…
Seek out the intertwining of functional + aestheticAt its height, the design process in architecture may be a search for solutions where there is a purpose to beauty, and a beauty to purpose. We recognize the ineffable quality of light as it shines from a hidden source as well the practicality of lighting the way in a hall for example.
Design for the health of our communities and our eco-systems
We share an investment in the place we live and in its future. To say the whole world is our site and to think responsibly about it is not ambitious, it is an imperative and an opportunity for new forms of architecture.
