For the past five years the Times Square Alliance in New York City has invited architecture and design firms to submit proposals for a public installation celebrating Valentine’s Day. Joining the ranks of previous winners including BIG and Freecell, Brooklyn-based firm Situ Studio has been chosen to create the 2013 Times Square Valentine Heart Design, which will be on display from February 12 through March 8.

For the first time in the history of the competition, Times Square Arts (the public art program of the Times Square Alliance) collaborated with Design Trust for Public Space in search for the winning proposal. Eight firms submitted design proposals, with Situ Studio’s Heartwalk winning the competition. Using wooden boards salvaged from Hurricane Sandy, the design was inspired by the “love that binds people together during trying times.” The planks lift from the ground to form an illuminated, heart-shaped court in the middle of Duffy Square. The enclosure allows visitors to literally stand in the heart of New York City— how romantic!
